Citrix Claims 35 Million ICA Licenses

Citrix Systems Inc. is claiming it has sold 35 million licenses of its ICA client software for enabling server-based computing.

ICA, which stands for Independent Computing Architecture, runs on a client machine -- be it a PC, thin client or other device -- to allow the user to view and interact with applications running on a server.

Citrix' server software, MetaFrame, runs on Windows NT and Windows 2000. The company also recently introduced Unix versions of MetaFrame but the majority of customers run Windows servers on the back end.

The number of concurrent users of Citrix ICA is much lower -- about 9 million. Citrix estimates about a four-to-one ratio of ICA clients to concurrent users.

The overall license statistic, released at Citrix iForum in Orlando, Fla., represents about a 45 percent increase over the 24 million clients sold as of May 2000. The concurrent user number represents 50 percent growth over the year-and-a-half-old number, which was 6 million.

Mike Richtberg, director of product management for Citrix' Web products, attributes the gains to the economy of server-based computing and to a dual growth path -- new customers and existing customers acquiring more seats.

The company has nearly 150,000 customer companies.
