Stratus Picks up Second OEM

Toshiba Corp. will rebrand Stratus Technologies' fault-tolerant two-processor servers running Windows 2000 Advanced Server for sale in Japan. Toshiba joins NEC Corp. in making a deal to sell systems based on Stratus' technology.

The agreement with Toshiba is another endorsement of Stratus' industry-standard, fault-tolerant technology from a major computer manufacturer.

Stratus released its first system based on Intel processors and the Windows operating system in June -- the Stratus ftServer 5200. Previously, Stratus sold fault-tolerant RISC servers running its own operating system or the HP-UX flavor of Unix.

Toshiba will sell the Stratus ftServer 5200 as the Toshiba Magnia FT5200.

The Stratus systems, available in the United States, and the Toshiba systems come in two versions. A variant called dual-modular redundancy comes with a 99.999 percent availability pledge. A more expensive option called triple-modular redundancy comes with a 99.9999 percent availability pledge and a higher price tag.

NEC also resells Stratus' ftServer 5200, but that company also developed its own lower priced version of the two-processor server based on the Stratus technology.
