Office Subscriptions Off for Now

Microsoft Corp. won't be implementing its much ballyhooed Office subscriptions with the upcoming release of Office XP.

Redmond confirmed recently that the May 31 debut of Office XP won't be the debut of subscription services for Office.

"Office XP will not be offered as a subscription offering in the [United States] this year," a Microsoft spokesperson wrote in an e-mail. "We are taking a conservative approach to delivering subscription offerings because we want to ensure that our customers and partners have a great experience with this new delivery model."

Microsoft still plans to roll out subscription services with the Office XP rollout in some parts of the world.

"We're rolling out subscription offerings on a country-by-country basis, but we remain very committed to the subscription model and we definitely plan to continue with our plans to deliver subscription offerings worldwide," the spokesperson wrote.
