Microsoft Extends Office XP Capabilities with Smart Tag Toolkit

Microsoft today announced a new toolkit that expands the capabilities of Office XP through the use of smart tags.

The Smart Tag Software Development Kit (Smart Tag SDK), which is free and immediately available, is designed to provide developers with tools to build smart tags in Office XP.

Smart tags enable dynamic recognition of content, allowing users to quickly access and analyze information. By using the Smart Tag SDK, users will now be able to design specific smart tags that will integrate Office XP with Web applications and enterprise data sources, enabling developers to create solutions that lower deployment costs and improve business agility.

To help developers build the tags, the toolkit includes a tutorial, programmer’s guide, ASP reference, and sample code.

In other Office XP news, a Microsoft spokesperson did not confirm or deny reports that Office XP RC-1 shipped last week. “While there has been much speculation concerning the timing of Office XP, Microsoft is not prepared to comment on any reports at this time,” says the spokesperson. “However, I can assure you that Office XP is on schedule to ship in late spring of this year.” – Jim Martin
