Microsoft: Buy NT Now, Get W2K Free Later

Customers who purchase Windows NT between now and the Feb. 17 launch of Windows 2000 will qualify for a free upgrade to the pending OS once it is available, according to a Microsoft Corp. Web page dated yesterday.
The Web page in the Windows 2000 section of www.microsoft.com says that customers who buy Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack (SP) 4, Windows NT Server 4.0 SP 4 with 5 or more client licenses, NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition with 5 or more client licenses, and Windows NT 4.0 Server, Enterprise Edition with 5 or more client licenses are eligible for the upgrade to Windows 2000.
To get the upgrade, customers need to buy either the software or OEM hardware with NT pre-installed, download a Windows 2000 Technology Guarantee Coupon, fill it out and send it to Microsoft. The coupon is available at www.microsoft.com/windows2000/guide/server/pricing/techg.asp.
Customers in the Microsoft Open License Program can also qualify for the free upgrade if they call (800) 248-0655. Microsoft Select License customers will receive Windows 2000 on the Select CD.
There has not been an official announcement from Redmond on the new upgrade policy yet. The move could help Microsoft preserve Windows NT sales momentum.
