SP5 Released for Terminal Server

Microsoft Corp. has delivered its fifth Service Pack for Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, holding with its tradition of trailing about one service pack behind the general operating system.

SP5 for Terminal Server incorporates many of the same fixes of SP5 for Windows NT, which was released in the spring. SP4 for Terminal Server was released in April, too.

Windows NT is up to SP6, which was released last month but contained some WINSOCK and driver problems that forced Microsoft to repost it as SP6a.

Some specific issues corrected in SP5 for Terminal Server involve unloading problems with roaming user profiles, third-party printer drivers causing stop errors, Terminal Server always contacting the Primary Domain Controller, and Terminal Server not supporting user-mode printer drivers.

Terminal Server SP5 is not a required upgrade for Year 2000 compliance.

The 40-bit encryption version is currently available for download. A full install is a 34.5 MB download, although an express installation is available. The 128-bit encryption version had not been posted for downloading.

No previous service pack needs to be loaded to install Terminal Server SP5.
