MS and HP Support IPP

Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. announced today that they are delivering support for the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) throughout the Windows platforms.

IPP allows a user with an Internet connection to send a document to any Internet-connected printer. This enables remote employees to print documents to his company's printer. Instead of faxing a PowerPoint presentation, one could simply print it to someone's color printer.

The client application, called Internet Printing Services, will be available for the entire Windows 9.x line as well as Windows 2000 Professional and Server when it's released later this year.

HP is the first vendor to implement an Internet printing solution based on IPP by extending support across the majority of its JetDirect print server line. IPP came from the Printer Working Group (PWG, www.pwg.org), a consortium of all major printer companies. IPP 1.0 has been approved as a standard by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF, www.ietf.org).

A beta version of IPP is available in the third beta release of Windows 2000 Professional and Server. Final versions of the Internet Printing Services for Windows 98 and Win98 SE can download it from the Windows Update site and for Windows 95 at the Windows 95 download site. -- Brian Ploskina
