IBM Announces Storage Breakthrough

IBM Corp. claims to have set a new record for high density data storage. Yesterday, the company announced a laboratory result fitting 20.3 billion bits on one square inch of hard disk storage space.

The new disk drives are capable of storing more than three times as much data as any storage product currently shipping. IBM researchers say they are optimistic that the 20-gigabit-per-inch products could be available within three years.

Such a giant step in storage capacity will enable many possibilities. Disk drives will likely become lighter and use less energy. Greater storage capacity could then be used to increase the capabilities of portable electronics and laptops that use IBM microdrive data storage disks.

Technical details about the demonstration and the new drives will be released next week at the International Magnetics Conference (Intermag 99) in Korea. Information about IBM hard drives is available at www.ibm.com/harddrive.
