Microsoft "Traps" Mutek for Debugging

Microsoft Corp. added a new partner to increase its relationship with Visual Studio developers. MuTek Solutions Inc. (www.mutek.com) today announced that it signed an agreement with the Redmond, Wash., software company to provide its BugTrapper software quality tool to Microsoft's worldwide development, testing and support groups.

MuTek reports that one of the largest problems in spotting bugs in the development process is replicating the events that caused them. BugTrapper "traps" bugs by generating a record of how and where bugs occurred, providing a more direct path to the cause of the problem behavior. MuTek compares BugTrapper to the black box of an aircraft flight recorder.

The product uses "executable hooking" technology whereby it places trace points into the executable without effecting the functionality. The trace points can log any executed function or source line together with the values of variables, parameters and return values. Once the execution has been recorded, analysis and more importantly, debugging, can be performed off-line in BugTrapper's debugger-like environment.

MuTek, founded in 1996, is based in Israel and Sunnyvale, Calif. BugTrapper is priced at $495 per license and supports programs compiled with Microsoft's Visual Studio version 4.1 or higher and runs on the Windows 9.x/NT platform. -- Brian Ploskina, Assistant Editor
