Shifting its traditionally fundamentalist religious beliefs more than just a bit, Sun Microsystems Inc. announced a PCI card that enables Sun Ultra workstations to support Windows applications.

The SunPCi PC co-processor card enables Unix users to run Windows and DOS environments, right alongside Sun’s own Solaris Operating Environment. Solaris users no longer need to purchase a separate Windows machine to reap the benefits of Microsoft Office applications.

The SunPCi, which sells for $495, can be managed and supported like any PC on the network via products such as Tivoli Enterprise Software from Tivoli Systems. Inc. (www.tivoli.com).

"Previously, customers had to choose between Windows or Unix systems, and sharing data between the two systems was difficult," says Masood Jabbar, president, Computer Systems, Sun Microsystems. "With this, you get native speed performance of both Unix and Windows environments, plus the ability to transfer data between the two operating systems."

Sun also released version 2.0 of its SunForum suite of data conferencing tools, which allows its workstations to share data and applications in real time with people on Sun systems as well as Mac, PC and Windows NT machines. – Thomas Sullivan, Staff Reporter/Reviews Editor
