HP Returns to Java Fold

Sun Microsystems Inc. and Hewlett Packard Co. announced that HP has signed an agreement to license Sun's Java HotSpot virtual machine and that it will support version 1.2 of the Java Development Kit.

HotSpot is designed to dramatically improve Java performance, which has traditionally generated the most complaints about Java. HP plans to incorporate HotSpot into future versions of HP-UX. An alpha version of HotSpot is currently available; a public beta release is expected this winter.

HP had raised concerns about another split in the Java community when it announced plans to develop its own JVM for use in embedded systems. This announcement seems to indicate that split isn't as serious as it was first thought. --Michele Rosen, Staff Reporter, New York Correspondent
