WinProxy Delivers on Promises

Polka your way around the Internet.

Here’s the problem: you need to get on to the Internet to buy tickets to next Saturday’s Polka Fest. Unfortunately, Susie, your beloved, is hours deep into an online Scrabble game and she can’t just quit so you can do the Chicken Dance. If only you had WinProxy, all would be bliss.

Here’s how I’ve configured networks connecting to the Internet via cable modems, ISDN and DSL with WinProxy. I’ll select one PC to act as the WinProxy box. This PC can continue to do other work on the network; it is, however, the LAN’s access point to the Internet, so it must remain powered-up any time a connection’s needed. In this PC there are two network cards: NIC A is attached to the Internet, NIC B is attached to the LAN. During the install, you’ll tell WinProxy which card is which. The install process will also allow you to set any ports you may want to open, types of Web content you want to filter out, and confirm your IP settings.

Once WinProxy is installed, you can tweak as many settings you’d like. For example, you can determine when certain users or groups can use the Internet connection and what they can access. You can also filter out activities like chat or e-mail.

WinProxy includes a six-month subscription to Trend Micro’s anti-virus service. This centralized anti-virus approach ensures that all incoming data is scanned before any viruses get onto your LAN. Be aware, however, that after six months of the anti-virus service you have to start paying for a subscription to continue using it. Fees for the anti- virus service range from $29.99 for one year for a three-user connection to $7,200 for two years with 250 users.

WinProxy also installs a trial version of Secure Computing’s Smart Filter Basic service. This service provides filters to block objectionable content. Again, after six months you have to pay a fee to continue using this service. These fees range from $29.99 for three users for one year, to $3,800 for 250 users for two years for a more sophisticated filtering service.

WinProxy lets you configure filtering on an application-by-application basis. (Click image to view larger version.)

WinProxy licensing is available for three, five, 10, 25 and unlimited connections and ranges from $59.95 for three connections to $799 for the unlimited version. If you want to try before you buy, you can download a trial version of WinProxy from

Do I recommend WinProxy? Absolutely. Not only because I use it in my home and have installed it for several clients, but also because it delivers on its promises. See you at the Polka Fest.

Winproxy is only as secure as the operating system that it runs on.
Furthermore, it is inconsistent, offers little customization, and could be considered an incomplete router.

Support sucks, they don't answer Emails, they are not available 7x24, excluding their product from any real business use. They distribute untested releases of their software (5.1. r1c) that cause major problems for users and then ignore requests for help. Apparently they still don't support Nortel VPN, the only reason r1c was installed. If it wasn't the only option for starband use, I would throw it in the trash.

WinProxy is good but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was the best. Have recently encountered quite a few clashes with third-party spftware, I gave InterGate from Vicomsoft a try and all my troubles were over. It's a firewall, connection sharing and content filtering package, with a free 'try before you buy' trial version, downloadable from their website. I was recommended it by several contributors to a security news group that I dip in and out of. Give it a try. I know that WinProxy was also highly recommended, but I thought InterGate was a lot more stable for my SOHO windows environment.

Winproxy has saved me countless headaches with virus screening. I have used it at home and Work for the past three years. And i cannot count the times users have said "I got a blank email from my friend and then a alert from winproxy" . And I did not have to spend the next three days cleaning up some nasty virus from the cute picture or screensaver they downloaded. Great stuff!!

I find WP to be a very good product. Yes, VPN is still a problem, but that is no reason to badmouth this product. For those of you "anonymous" users who want a product to do everything you will keep looking for months or longer. WP is the only proxy/firewall/antivirus/content filter all in one product I have been able to find. VPN clients are finiky and I am sure Ositis will get there eventually and then they will definetly have the best product of its type on the market.

Oh yeah its great, however, I have found support to be slow and hard to get here in new zealand, I have the Nortel VPN client problem, that no one seems to want to no about, I have sent countless emails to them concerning this. I was advised that there is a BETA version where this problem has been solved, after buying the software and then emailing them saying how do i get this beta version so I can use my Nortel VPN client. no word, nothing nothing at all. all other aspects of the software are fantasic great, kewl... but this VPN thing is getting me no where... is there anyone out there with any info on the BETA version or some kind of patch for Winproxy to enable the outbound VPN client requests to be made ??? help someone please...

Ditto what 'anonymous' said on 05/11/2002... "works good except for one thing. they talk about the vpn support but don't support the nortel vpn. they have been saying over a year they are working with nortel, but no results yet..." Look at Linkbyte's ComTun... It supports the Nortel VPN... (I'm not associated with Linkbyte--just a happy customer)

WinProxy is a great program. I have used it for about 2 years now at a daily newspaper with about 25 PCs and Macs using mail and web. It just works, and has stopped countless viruses. We also have mapped ports to allow terminal services, VNC & FTP from remote sites via the net.

I'm an italian consultant and i have installed it in different situation, without problem. It is easy to manage, easy to install. I suggest it for every small /medium requests. I have installed even Microsoft Proxy...but there is no comparing.. Winproxy run very well.

I have been using WinProxy to manage my SOHO wireless network and am very satisfied. In addition to providing Internet connection sharing, the firewall has been top notch, rated as STEALTH on many of the security sites. I have recommended and installed this program for many of my business clients.

Works good expect for one thing. They talk about the VPN support but don't support the Nortel VPN. They have been saying over a year they are working with Nortel, but no results yet. I'm looking at other products for this reason only.

Fri, May 10, 2002 starbanduser USA

Beware--there is a serious flaw with SmartFilter in WinProxy 4.0 for StarBand--any workstation can bypass filter by simply unchecking the "use proxy" box in Internet Explorer. U.S. support is very poor, unresponsive, only free for 30 days; don't know about Australia.

One of my favorite products. Coupled with Trend Micros Anti-Virus, this is a great package.

Sun, May 5, 2002 Jan Mohamed England

Excellent Product & at the RIGHT price too!!

we have installed it on numerous Client sites - complete peace of mind - setup is a doddle

Wed, May 1, 2002 Ed Tennessee

It IS a really good product. Now if they can get a GRE tunnel through the firewall from the outside (LL2P VPN), it would be an OUTSTANDING product!! They say they're working on it.

Wed, May 1, 2002 Al London

Support sucks, I tried to send an email and it got bounced as they dont have me registered. Dosnt seem to work with MS VPN client, a lot of lighter beter products out there ....keep looking

Yes winproxy is great, easiest i can put it fantastic, me some friends have used it for a gaming network firewall for years now. they have certainly speed up the performance in the program, the anti virus protection is great... best proxy program ive come across

I use the 5 user version and Love it I have recommended it to others and have setup trial versions that really prove themselves to my clients.

I was at Frys and even got the sales staff convinced in getting it from ONLINE and to try it and then pass around their experiences to others (All possitives have to be WINProxy just works)

I use a Dial computer to maintain the connection and have 5 others connecting to the proxy. The best thing to be added was Transparent mode, Firewall, Virus protect, and imporved Mapped ports.

Im waiting for the next update I really hope they add a small EMail server.
3 users the server would support 3 boxes and so on.
Hope they are keeping track of these posts.

Yes,I am impressed with Winproxy and its well secured firewall. My son plays international games behind it,My partner chats with Yahoo and often puts out a challenge for hackers and crackers to bring it down.So far we have not had a failure in the last three years.I stream NASA Television behind it with good results and security.
I'm going to use winproxy again on our second network as it is a first class product.Thankyou Winproxy for your Virus detecting emails telling me about my hits.

After looking for the best product to use, I found it. WinProxy rocks..!! I have it on evaluation at the moment, but will DEFINATELY be purchasing the license, and also the antivirus subscription..!!

The antivirus module is terrific; it is autoupdating and eliminates email viruses BEFORE they get to your client machines.

Sat, Apr 6, 2002 Lily Northern Minnesota

WinProxy ran great with Windows98, and does now with WindowsMe. Coming up on 1 year of use of WinProxy for us: no email with a virus, and support site gets better and better every time I go there.

Fri, Apr 5, 2002 Mike Australia

We purchased Winproxy from Winproxy Australia and thier support was unbelievable. It would be great if all software companies support the software the same way. Keep up the good work.

Fri, Apr 5, 2002 Rainer Austria

Thu, Feb 28, 2002 Ken Tulsa

We've used WinProxy for 18 months now and would highly recommend it. I've installed at two of our business sites, plus I use it at home with my cable modem and LAN. The Anti-Virus program has filtered countless emails successfully.

Wed, Feb 27, 2002 Anonymous Anonymous

I have used all previous versions, best proxy software i have seen!!!
