Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 2 Now Available

Microsoft last week released Service Pack 2 (SP2) of Office for Mac 2011.

The release addresses some "critical" issues, according to Microsoft. Based on the list of more than 100 fixes (Excel document download), the service pack also seems to remedy some basic functionality in Microsoft's latest productivity suite for Apple Mac computers.

Microsoft highlights some of the improvements for the suite, as well as for Outlook for Mac 2011, in this SP2 support article. Microsoft's last service pack release, SP1 for Office for Mac 2011, came out last summer.

Here are just a few of the fixes for the general suite in SP2. Microsoft added an improvement that lets users see the files they've stored at the root of a SkyDrive folder. An issue with SharePoint in which saving a new file results in an "upload failed" message has been fixed. Lastly, a crash problem associated with syncing files has been addressed.

Quite a lot of the fixes in SP2 were associated with Outlook for Mac 2011. For instance, an e-mail that is exactly one page long now will print in its entirety, instead of cutting off text at the bottom. Calendar items within an e-mail will now display the time of a meeting. A problem with bold and underline attributes, in which they would turn on after being turned off following indentation, has been fixed.

Other fixes are associated with Excel, Word and PowerPoint, specifically. A problem that caused Excel to crash after changing preference settings has been addressed. Microsoft fixed a problem in Word that causes the text highlight color to change when saving to the .DOCX format. For PowerPoint, Microsoft fixed a problem where the names of coeditors aren't displayed when working on a presentation.

Many more fixes in SP2 can be found listed in Microsoft's documentation described above. SP2 can be downloaded from this page. This release is recommended for users of the Mac OS X 10.5.8 ("Leopard") operating system or later versions of OS X.
