Citi Hack Exposes User Data
Citigroup has confirmed that over 200,000 Citibank credit card users have had their names, e-mail addresses and account numbers stolen by hackers.
As with the recent hack of the Sony PSN Network, Citigroup officials delayed commenting on the attack, which occurred more than a month ago. Citigroup's spokesman Sean Kevelighanreleased the following statement today only after the UK-based Financial Times broke the news of the breach yesterday:
During routine monitoring, we recently discovered unauthorized access to Citi's Account Online. A limited number -- roughly one percent -- of Citi North America bankcard customers' account information (such as name, account number and contact information including email address) was viewed. The customer's social security number, date of birth, card expiration date and card security code (CVV) were not compromised. We are contacting customers whose information was impacted. Citi has implemented enhanced procedures to prevent a recurrence of this type of event. For the security of these customers, we are not disclosing further details.
The company would not give detail on how the attack was initiated or why it took so long for officials to acknowledge the incident. Citigroup did say that it is planning on issuing new credit cards to those customers affected by the breach.
