Small Business Server 2008 Gets New Exam

Microsoft developing new exam for IT professionals who plan to implement Small Business Server 2008; exam in beta until Sept. 12.

Fresh on the heels of the release of Small Business Server 2008 to hardware manufacturers, Microsoft's Learning Group late last week released Exam 70-653 TS: Windows Small Business Server 2008, Configuring to testing centers. The beta, numbered 71-653 while in beta format, the exam is available at Prometric testing centers almost worldwide (except in India, Pakistan and China, according to this blog post) and runs until Sept. 12, 2008.

Exam 70-653 is aimed at candidates who have at least one year of comprehensive experience implementing and managing a Small Business Server environment, according to the exam objective guide. Those who pass this exam either in its live format immediately get the MCTS: Windows Small Business Server 2008, Configuration title. (For those who pass the beta, the title will appear on transcripts soon after the exam becomes generally available.)

Exam 70-653 is expected to be generally available some time in November, soon after the SBS 2008 software ships.

The exam guide lists one course, 6445A: Implementing and Administering Windows Small Business Server 2008, that's currently available through Microsoft Certified Partners for Learning Solutions centers; no Microsoft Press self-study guides are planned or listed on the MCP site.

Beta exams are free and those who pass the exams in beta can count the exam as a live one toward a qualifying certification. To find out more, click here.
